“Echizen” is the ancient name for the eastern area of Fukui Prefecture. The lacquered plate depicts Mt. Fuji and its reflection in the water with the skill of “Makie,” which is the skill utilizing the lacquer viscosity to attach coatings such as gold and silver powder on the surface of wares.

The Ma Ying-jeou Collection

“Aizu” refers to the western area of Fukushima Prefecture. In Japanese, “Sakazuki” refers to cup specifically used for Japanese Sake, which might be used in Shintō sacrifices ceremonies or rituals. The Sake cup “Sakazuki” employed the master technique of “Keshikinji” that apply micro gold powder on the surface of the ware.

The picture on the lacquered round tray is the main palace hall of Shuri Castle, which was destroyed during WWII and had been rebuilt. Shuri was the capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and its remains were listed as one of the World Heritage by UNESCO.

“Bajōhai” is the Japanese Sake cups with longer foot (called “Kōdai” in Japanese) that allows samurais to grab the cup and drink Sake during horse rides. The outside of the Sake cups applied the skill of “Komanuri” that used colored lacquer to form concentric circles.

Yamanaka Lacquerware originated from the Yamanaka-onsen Hot Spring in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, where the timber of quality is produced, and the carpenter skills are advanced, which are beneficial to the manufacture of “Kiji” (the original wooden figure before being lacquered).
