The Ma Ying-jeou Collection

“Bizen” is the ancient name for the southeastern area of Okayama Prefecture, and the “Yinbeyaki” under the category of Bizen Ware produced in the area is the most representative. The two pieces of works are called “Tokkuri” (Sake bottle with smaller bottle mouth and bigger body) and “Sakenomi” (Sake cup), respectively. In 2004, the producer Isezaki Jun was designated as Living National Treasure by the MEXT in Japan.

Mikawachi Ware is also called “Hirado Ware.” “Hirado” is the name of an island in northern Nagasaki Prefecture, which has always been the portal between Japan and Mainland China since ancient times. At the end of 16th century, Japan invaded Korea and abducted numerous potters. Therefore, the pottery-making skills from Korea had spread to Hirado area, and had been developed since then.

“Mino” is the ancient name for the southern area of Gifu Prefecture. The area is currently the largest source for pottery and porcelain in Japan, the amount of which is accounting for approximately half of the production in the country. The porcelain plate is categorized as “Seihakuji” (literally meaning blue-and-white porcelain, one line of Japanese white porcelain), its well-known feature is the bluish glaze color.
